<br />
My laptop had a catastrophic hard disk failure last week and I lost all of the files for this project -- the raw video, the edited video, the 3D models, the recorded audio, the music, EVERYTHING!<br />
<br />
Although I perform weekly backups, I didn't include these files in my backups simply because there was too much data. I didn't have enough space on my backup hard drive to include these files. Of course, in retrospect, it would have been well worth the money to invest a couple hundred bucks in a huge backup drive. But hindsight being 20/20, that bad decision resulted in the loss of gigs of data representing thousands of hours of hard work.<br />
<br />
Maybe if I'm lucky I'll stumble across a copy of the animatic buried somewhere and upload that so at least we have something to show for our efforts. Otherwise, this blog is the only record we have of all of that hard work.<br />

<br />
I'm the only one working on this project right now, and it's pretty much been that way for the past few years, so every year or so I get a little burned out.<br />
<br />
After recharging my batteries, I'll jump back on this project and resume updating this blog.<br />
<br />
Thanks,<br />

<br />
After consolidating the different shots into a single CGI model, there were some problems. One of those problems was the fact that the matte painting I'm using for the background wasn't tall enough to fill the sky in the shot of the Jedi Starfighter landing: <br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YB3Yg6uIxbU/T9TfCtngXdI/AAAAAAAABh8/sxltlcYNfVk/s1600/ROTF+B102b-30+%28Old+Sky%29.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YB3Yg6uIxbU/T9TfCtngXdI/AAAAAAAABh8/sxltlcYNfVk/s640/ROTF+B102b-30+%28Old+Sky%29.bmp" width="640" /> </a> The red arrow shows the seam between the top of matte painting #1 (the Coruscant skyline) and the bottom of matte painting #2 (the Coruscant sky).<br />
<br />
Of course, we couldn't live with such an obvious flaw in the shot, so I extended the sky on matte painting #1:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qaVqN3rsXcA/T9TfB2BOjXI/AAAAAAAABh0/0WDubHUmJFc/s1600/ROTF+B102b-30+%28New+Sky%29.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qaVqN3rsXcA/T9TfB2BOjXI/AAAAAAAABh0/0WDubHUmJFc/s640/ROTF+B102b-30+%28New+Sky%29.bmp" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Yay -- no more seam!<br />
<br />
Hopefully I'll have more time to work on the movie in the near future...<br />

<div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SicTp2sOAl4/T8JloxPKRWI/AAAAAAAABhI/EHRc-ICB1do/s1600/ROTF+B102b-48+%28Old%29.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Great... Google changed their interface, so now my text formatting is screwed up and I can't
figure out how to display the pictures side-by-side anymore. What a pain...</div>
<br />
Anyway, after consolidating most of the scenes at the Coruscant Spaceport into a
single 3ds file, I improved some texture maps to make the model look
more realistic.<br />
<br />
<br />
Here's a before-and-after comparison of Scene B102b when the Jedi Fighter lands at the Coruscant Spaceport:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SicTp2sOAl4/T8JloxPKRWI/AAAAAAAABhI/EHRc-ICB1do/s1600/ROTF+B102b-48+%28Old%29.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SicTp2sOAl4/T8JloxPKRWI/AAAAAAAABhI/EHRc-ICB1do/s640/ROTF+B102b-48+%28Old%29.bmp" width="640" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DwWnXi257Rc/T8JlqDEsreI/AAAAAAAABhQ/zcLcKDiNk80/s1600/ROTF+B102b-48+%28Rusty%29.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DwWnXi257Rc/T8JlqDEsreI/AAAAAAAABhQ/zcLcKDiNk80/s640/ROTF+B102b-48+%28Rusty%29.bmp" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Admittedly, the changes are minor -- I made the buildings shinier and I made those crane things (immediately below the Jedi Starfighter, and also in the background on the bottom-left third of the screen) rusty. Small improvements, but I still think they make the scene look more realistic.<br />
<br />
Here's another before-and-after comparison, with a more obvious change:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5B257OjOexc/T8JoQObRx1I/AAAAAAAABho/iKwBfUCNdK4/s1600/ROTF+C118-A.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5B257OjOexc/T8JoQObRx1I/AAAAAAAABho/iKwBfUCNdK4/s640/ROTF+C118-A.bmp" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tA9qwqHhR6U/T8Jn4MMY6aI/AAAAAAAABhg/I7yjNVnAQIM/s1600/ROTF+C118+%28Old%29.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G0MXjt-Nj7g/T8Jn3L0ypzI/AAAAAAAABhY/TvqidIbZdeo/s1600/ROTF+C118+%28New+-+Ray+Traced+Shadows+-+1H+48M%29.bmp" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-G0MXjt-Nj7g/T8Jn3L0ypzI/AAAAAAAABhY/TvqidIbZdeo/s640/ROTF+C118+%28New+-+Ray+Traced+Shadows+-+1H+48M%29.bmp" width="640" /></a></div>
I hid the Jedi Starfighter in the "after" picture, just so that I could see the ground and background more clearly. Aside from that temporary change:<br />
<ul>
<li>I changed the ground to look more realistic.</li>
<li>I removed that concept Jedi Starfighter from the background -- it seemed like it made the scene too busy.</li>
<li>I replaced some of the boxes with more detailed and realistic-looking boxes.</li>
<li>I changed the background sky image from the smoking Jedi Temple (which wasn't tall enough to fill the screen) to the new Coruscant skyline.</li>
</ul>
<br />
There will undoubtedly be more improvements in the future, but that's it for now.<br />

<br />
Despite the lack of posts, I <u>have</u> been working on the movie as time permits. Unfortunately, the work I'm doing right now doesn't lend itself to pictures.<br />
<br />
Back when we created the animatic, I often split a CG model into separate files for each scene. For example, if there were 5 scenes at the Coruscant Spaceport, I split the Coruscant Spaceport model into 5 separate files so that each file could focus on the elements necessary for that scene (lighting, background, etc.). The benefit was smaller file sizes that reduced the frequency of 3DS crashing, and faster render times (since I deleted unnecessary geometry). The downside was that changes to one model (ex: improving texture maps) didn't propagate to the other scenes.<br />
<br />
So... right now I'm consolidating all of the different versions of each model into a single "master" CG model. For example, right now I'm consolidating all of the different Coruscant Spaceport scenes into a single "Coruscant Spaceport" file. That way, when I make improvements in the future (like texture maps), those improvements will be reflected in all scenes at the Coruscant Spaceport.<br />
<br />
It's very tedious and time-consuming, so I don't know how long it will take. However, the hard work will be worth it because when I'm done consolidating the models, I'm going to resume improving the mdoels (primarily texture maps) to give us the photorealistic imagery we want.<br />

One of the scenes that stuck out recently was when Ryke drops a cargo container on a bunch of Stormtroopers in the Star Destroyer hangar.<br /><br />Even though the cargo container model we used is from the "Star Wars" universe, I thought it might look better if we dropped a more iconic Star Wars object on the Stormtroopers.<br /><br />So... I replaced the cargo container with a TIE fighter. Here are comparison shots:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nm8cc758TA0/T4sHfEO0LWI/AAAAAAAABf4/zLlRYl65Yi4/s1600/ROTF%2BK603c%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-nm8cc758TA0/T4sHfEO0LWI/AAAAAAAABf4/zLlRYl65Yi4/s320/ROTF%2BK603c%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5731683181052308834" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bt1F4aj9Jc0/T4sHfUaGzRI/AAAAAAAABgA/UcYl7_d1zyM/s1600/ROTF%2BK603c-0%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bt1F4aj9Jc0/T4sHfUaGzRI/AAAAAAAABgA/UcYl7_d1zyM/s320/ROTF%2BK603c-0%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5731683185394634002" border="0" /></a><br />I had to change the camera angle because Ryke dislodges the object by shooting it with a blaster, and if I kept the old camera angle, you wouldn't be able to see the blaster bolts knocking the TIE fighter loose because the TIE fighter's wing blocked the view.<br /><br />BTW, if we decide to keep this change, I may add more TIE fighters hanging behind this one.<br /><br />And yes, I made sure that they DO have TIE fighters hanging in the Star Destroyer hangar. Here's a reference picture from "Return of the Jedi":<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pp8IDOKvR4U/T4sIFsgxbHI/AAAAAAAABgQ/dW3Lhs29jKI/s1600/ROTF%2BE6%2BReference%2B-%2B00hr%2B03min%2B21sec.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 170px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pp8IDOKvR4U/T4sIFsgxbHI/AAAAAAAABgQ/dW3Lhs29jKI/s400/ROTF%2BE6%2BReference%2B-%2B00hr%2B03min%2B21sec.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5731683844700073074" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Here's another comparison, which is after the object has crushed the Stormtroopers:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F0txIqXaMWE/T4sIcikUIzI/AAAAAAAABg0/w0Wq-dPVs-8/s1600/ROTF%2BK603e%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-F0txIqXaMWE/T4sIcikUIzI/AAAAAAAABg0/w0Wq-dPVs-8/s320/ROTF%2BK603e%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5731684237167567666" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CyhB4qGikNE/T4sIc934x-I/AAAAAAAABg8/YteJgUmyNt4/s1600/ROTF%2BK603e%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CyhB4qGikNE/T4sIc934x-I/AAAAAAAABg8/YteJgUmyNt4/s320/ROTF%2BK603e%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5731684244497418210" border="0" /></a><br />Again, I had to change the camera angle a bit in the revised scene.<br /><br />As much as I like the TIE fighter instead of the cargo container, my only concern is that it supposedly crushes 4 Stormtroopers beneath it. I'm not sure a TIE fighter is heavy enough to crush 4 Stormtroopers and still lie flat on the floor. A couple possible solutions are:<br /><br />1) Cheat the size of the TIE fighter, making it larger and thus make it look heavier, and/or<br />2) Have the TIE fighter lying 6-12" off the floor, so it looks like the Stormtrooper bodies are keeping the TIE fighter's wing from lying completely flat on the floor.<br /><br />What do you guys think? Do you like the TIE fighter better than the cargo container? If so, do you think I should make the TIE fighter bigger and/or a few inches off the ground?<br /><br />Thanks,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-36841200879641433232012-03-25T10:59:00.006-07:002012-03-25T11:09:56.308-07:00New-and-Improved Master AnimaticAs you know, we've been gradually improving our CG models to provide photorealistic backgrounds for our live actors. However, for the most part, I have NOT updated our master animatic with the new material.<br /><br />Believe it or not, our master animatic was last rendered on 7-8-10! That means we've had almost 2 years of improvements that weren't reflected in the master animatic.<br /><br />Although I obviously can't post the updated animatic here (it's too big), here are a few before-and-after comparisons so you can get an idea of the improvements.<br /><br />Scene C115b (Ryke Thale leaving the Jedi Temple after planting bombs in the databank):<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kDO9Ub48lsI/T29eODEqvRI/AAAAAAAABew/Gd73FOUZ_pY/s1600/ROTF%2BC115b-6%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kDO9Ub48lsI/T29eODEqvRI/AAAAAAAABew/Gd73FOUZ_pY/s320/ROTF%2BC115b-6%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723897246847253778" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YKRl_081KBU/T29eOHh5ULI/AAAAAAAABe4/nC__uxbp4X0/s1600/ROTF%2BC115b-6%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YKRl_081KBU/T29eOHh5ULI/AAAAAAAABe4/nC__uxbp4X0/s320/ROTF%2BC115b-6%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723897248043585714" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Scene C115c (Close-up of Ryke Thale as he suspects something may be wrong):<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7F8B2zEIXkI/T29ebh_Na1I/AAAAAAAABfI/KCZNMAhUTVQ/s1600/ROTF%2BC115c-5%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7F8B2zEIXkI/T29ebh_Na1I/AAAAAAAABfI/KCZNMAhUTVQ/s320/ROTF%2BC115c-5%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723897478484159314" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DEdmIYC818Q/T29ebuKA8LI/AAAAAAAABfU/ATWxyZVm3R8/s1600/ROTF%2BC115c-5%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DEdmIYC818Q/T29ebuKA8LI/AAAAAAAABfU/ATWxyZVm3R8/s320/ROTF%2BC115c-5%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723897481750704306" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Scene C115d (Moments before Ryke Thale's reaction to seeing droidekas behind the blast door):<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BLuwS_Wce74/T29enKe5umI/AAAAAAAABfg/Lqwtpz03nY4/s1600/ROTF%2BC115d-3%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BLuwS_Wce74/T29enKe5umI/AAAAAAAABfg/Lqwtpz03nY4/s320/ROTF%2BC115d-3%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723897678333065826" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x32aX3k6vsA/T29enDB8b5I/AAAAAAAABfo/c1njZk78SNU/s1600/ROTF%2BC115d-3%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-x32aX3k6vsA/T29enDB8b5I/AAAAAAAABfo/c1njZk78SNU/s320/ROTF%2BC115d-3%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5723897676332560274" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Now imagine about half of the animatic looking as new-and-improved as the sample screenshots, above, and you'll get an idea of how much better the new master animatic looks. As a result, I had to update some of the animatic scenes after Yane leaves Bibble's Bar.<br /><br />Here are 2 before-and-after comparisons showing the old med center exterior and the new-and-improved med center exterior:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-06JHszZCEbo/T1zuqSL7AkI/AAAAAAAABeA/z9ir1rhqzXQ/s1600/ROTF%2BI543%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-06JHszZCEbo/T1zuqSL7AkI/AAAAAAAABeA/z9ir1rhqzXQ/s320/ROTF%2BI543%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5718708037057446466" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_3Mhhs-5520/T1zuqkY3bLI/AAAAAAAABeI/UCxqyDBKM8Q/s1600/ROTF%2BI543%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_3Mhhs-5520/T1zuqkY3bLI/AAAAAAAABeI/UCxqyDBKM8Q/s320/ROTF%2BI543%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5718708041943575730" border="0" /></a><br />This is just a VERY rough draft. I didn't even bother to add Stormtrooper stand-ins in the new model. I'll definitely clean this up before the final version!<br /><br />Aside from looking more Star Wars-like, I also think the new version is less cluttered. The Imperial shuttle is more prominent and it looks more imposing, rather than being dwarfed by the med center building.<br /><br />Here's another scene showing a close-up:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EmvVydm9WDg/T1zuzfhZpBI/AAAAAAAABeY/U0i6IPVJw3k/s1600/ROTF%2BI544%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EmvVydm9WDg/T1zuzfhZpBI/AAAAAAAABeY/U0i6IPVJw3k/s320/ROTF%2BI544%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5718708195256017938" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-beQPPR5f1Z8/T1zuzgEKf_I/AAAAAAAABeg/jGiynzXK4mc/s1600/ROTF%2BI544-2%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-beQPPR5f1Z8/T1zuzgEKf_I/AAAAAAAABeg/jGiynzXK4mc/s320/ROTF%2BI544-2%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5718708195401826290" border="0" /></a><br />Again, this is just a rough draft. I'll definitely fix the texture maps, etc. before the final version.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-58237322043069672472012-03-04T09:39:00.013-08:002012-03-04T10:11:27.454-08:00Improved Bibble's Bar ExteriorI realized that our CG model for the exterior of Bibble's Bar needed to be re-done. Even though it was kitbashed from Star Wars models (the Mustafar control room and a Mos Eisley building), it looked incongruent.<br /><br />Here are before-and-after comparisons of the old model and the new model:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TIdXlmZo-XM/T1OpeW1_nDI/AAAAAAAABbk/-sjrqqJSnDs/s1600/ROTF%2BI510d-90%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TIdXlmZo-XM/T1OpeW1_nDI/AAAAAAAABbk/-sjrqqJSnDs/s320/ROTF%2BI510d-90%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716098691056507954" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--U_20Dx2dKA/T1OpeVtKdSI/AAAAAAAABbw/MhnKa9rQVPo/s1600/ROTF%2BI510d-90%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--U_20Dx2dKA/T1OpeVtKdSI/AAAAAAAABbw/MhnKa9rQVPo/s320/ROTF%2BI510d-90%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716098690751034658" border="0" /></a><br />In the "before" picture (above, left), you can tell I basically took a piece of the Mustafar Control Room and stuck it on the front of a Mos Eisley building.<br /><br />Here's a picture of the CG model for the Mustafar Control Room -- you can see the part I kitbashed for the old Bibble's Bar exterior in the back (those monitors with the yellow displays are the monitors with the red and blank displays in the old Bibble's Bar model):<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XUeMBgOeUBA/T1Op9dlBu8I/AAAAAAAABb8/bZJ9soXqUa4/s1600/Mustafar%2BCam2.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XUeMBgOeUBA/T1Op9dlBu8I/AAAAAAAABb8/bZJ9soXqUa4/s320/Mustafar%2BCam2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716099225440336834" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TIdXlmZo-XM/T1OpeW1_nDI/AAAAAAAABbk/-sjrqqJSnDs/s1600/ROTF%2BI510d-90%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TIdXlmZo-XM/T1OpeW1_nDI/AAAAAAAABbk/-sjrqqJSnDs/s320/ROTF%2BI510d-90%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716098691056507954" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Here's another before-and-after comparison from a different angle:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RaiqjwFZnTE/T1OqTuek8gI/AAAAAAAABcI/X3Mz7AoTqY0/s1600/ROTF%2BI510f%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RaiqjwFZnTE/T1OqTuek8gI/AAAAAAAABcI/X3Mz7AoTqY0/s320/ROTF%2BI510f%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716099607933809154" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uz4yZdqQGrM/T1OqT_DplOI/AAAAAAAABcQ/YmwoYxtzR8M/s1600/ROTF%2BI510f%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uz4yZdqQGrM/T1OqT_DplOI/AAAAAAAABcQ/YmwoYxtzR8M/s320/ROTF%2BI510f%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716099612384269538" border="0" /></a><br />In the "before" picture (above, left), all you really see the Mustafar Control Room geometry.<br />In the "after" picture (above, right), you can see how the background looks a lot more Mos Eisley/Tatooine-like.<br /><br />Here's the same "after" picture, but side-by-side against a reference photo from "Attack of the Clones" to compare the look and texture of the building:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MhgFsH-h4Ns/T1OtV56ZpdI/AAAAAAAABdo/IeDV6hpeimQ/s1600/ROTF%2BI510%2BE2%2BReference%2B-%2B01hr%2B05min%2B15sec.JPG"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 203px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MhgFsH-h4Ns/T1OtV56ZpdI/AAAAAAAABdo/IeDV6hpeimQ/s320/ROTF%2BI510%2BE2%2BReference%2B-%2B01hr%2B05min%2B15sec.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716102943897920978" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uz4yZdqQGrM/T1OqT_DplOI/AAAAAAAABcQ/YmwoYxtzR8M/s1600/ROTF%2BI510f%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Uz4yZdqQGrM/T1OqT_DplOI/AAAAAAAABcQ/YmwoYxtzR8M/s320/ROTF%2BI510f%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716099612384269538" border="0" /></a><br />I'll probably eventually replace that "garage door" with something better in the future, since we don't see any of that "garage door" stuff in the "Star Wars" movies. However, I just added it for now as a cheat since I didn't feel like figuring out what to put in that space (right now it's a big cut-out, like a garage).<br /><br />Here's the last before-and-after comparison:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KmpePIN2UFA/T1Oqr-IBwyI/AAAAAAAABcg/QoIZD1MkMnQ/s1600/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KmpePIN2UFA/T1Oqr-IBwyI/AAAAAAAABcg/QoIZD1MkMnQ/s320/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716100024451056418" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--SdzMsIqXvE/T1OqsCiZEBI/AAAAAAAABco/wdIpNj34AnI/s1600/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--SdzMsIqXvE/T1OqsCiZEBI/AAAAAAAABco/wdIpNj34AnI/s320/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716100025635377170" border="0" /></a><br />Bibble' Bar (right foreground) looks a lot more congruent with the building in the background in the "after" picture than in the "before" picture.<br /><br />By the way, the building in the background is a photograph of an actual building in Tunisia (where they filmed the Mos Eisley scenes) -- it's not a CG model. You can see the seam between the picture and the CG model in the "before" picture (look at the sand -- it's one color/texture in the background photograph (behind the land speeder) and it's a different color/texture in the foreground). Here's that same background photograph all by itself:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PK6GSf0TY7Y/T1Ov_wL7rSI/AAAAAAAABd0/f0eeoG9ZumY/s1600/24418.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PK6GSf0TY7Y/T1Ov_wL7rSI/AAAAAAAABd0/f0eeoG9ZumY/s320/24418.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716105861864860962" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Also, you may recall that our goal is to make our CG sets so photorealistic that they look like someone walked onto a real-life set and snapped a photo. We're getting closer with this model:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TOAM-yE8UYI/T1OrAxn9r6I/AAAAAAAABc4/fm3JLfSE9dU/s1600/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528New%2B-%2BRay%2BTraced%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TOAM-yE8UYI/T1OrAxn9r6I/AAAAAAAABc4/fm3JLfSE9dU/s320/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528New%2B-%2BRay%2BTraced%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716100381872598946" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--SdzMsIqXvE/T1OqsCiZEBI/AAAAAAAABco/wdIpNj34AnI/s1600/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--SdzMsIqXvE/T1OqsCiZEBI/AAAAAAAABco/wdIpNj34AnI/s320/ROTF%2BI541%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5716100025635377170" border="0" /></a><br />The 1st picture (above, left) shows the model rendered without the Yane stand-in and with "good" (i.e. ray-traced) shadows. You can see an example of the "good" shadows if you look at the top of the "garage door" and also if you look at the shadows cast by the moisture vaporator and nuna.<br /><br />The 2nd picture (above, right) is the same picture (with the Yane stand-in and "quick" shadows) seen above -- I just re-pasted it here so that you can see them side-by-side for easier comparison.<br /><br />We're getting there, slowly but surely...<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-45178363236619468262012-02-19T09:39:00.000-08:002012-02-19T09:57:37.748-08:00Improved Animatic Backgrounds for Bibble's BarAfter improving the CG model for Bibble's Bar, I started re-rendering some of the background plates for our animatic. It's been very time-consuming because a few months ago I moved all of the files for this project from my old PC to my laptop. As a result, there have been growing pains with missing plug-ins, missing video files, etc.<br /><br />Anyway, here are a few before-and-after comparisons of the re-rendered scenes from Bibble's Bar:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9vBUxFvY1Yk/T0E0kVmBeOI/AAAAAAAABZs/v8RRLM7bBl8/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9vBUxFvY1Yk/T0E0kVmBeOI/AAAAAAAABZs/v8RRLM7bBl8/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710903601359059170" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rfkzD7AxhxA/T0E0kv2pm9I/AAAAAAAABZ4/CW74KSw4Wzc/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Background%2B-%2BV2%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rfkzD7AxhxA/T0E0kv2pm9I/AAAAAAAABZ4/CW74KSw4Wzc/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Background%2B-%2BV2%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710903608408120274" border="0" /></a><br />You've seen this before-and-after comparison before:<br /><ul><li>The stadium seats were removed.</li><li>A bar and tables were added.<br /></li><li>The lighting was changed to green and purple.<br /></li></ul><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3wKo3kO8kTg/T0E0wGttZjI/AAAAAAAABaE/dzsy6xkq7AU/s1600/ROTF%2BI511-1%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3wKo3kO8kTg/T0E0wGttZjI/AAAAAAAABaE/dzsy6xkq7AU/s320/ROTF%2BI511-1%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710903803523196466" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YGpX-6FN-Aw/T0E0wGJkniI/AAAAAAAABaM/0Etl3-nbvwQ/s1600/ROTF%2BI511-1%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YGpX-6FN-Aw/T0E0wGJkniI/AAAAAAAABaM/0Etl3-nbvwQ/s320/ROTF%2BI511-1%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710903803371626018" border="0" /></a><br />You can barely tell in these compressed images, but the background in the scene above looks much more 3D and realistic than before. In fact, here's a bigger version of the "after" picture:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDPo_id5fXE/T0E2hk7DDMI/AAAAAAAABbY/VNcF9B1AIFk/s1600/ROTF%2BI511-1%2B%2528Final%2529%2B%25280-00-00-00%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YDPo_id5fXE/T0E2hk7DDMI/AAAAAAAABbY/VNcF9B1AIFk/s400/ROTF%2BI511-1%2B%2528Final%2529%2B%25280-00-00-00%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710905752957422786" border="0" /></a><br /> It's still a little hard to see, but the stucco on the walls looks more realistic, the TV in the background looks more realistic, and the cup and bottle in the foreground are new (though we may cheat those out of the final shot).<br /><br />This one also looks much better when seen full-size:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iXa53rYtoQ8/T0E0_qPEwjI/AAAAAAAABac/y-wLE2r_jvw/s1600/ROTF%2BI512a-2%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iXa53rYtoQ8/T0E0_qPEwjI/AAAAAAAABac/y-wLE2r_jvw/s320/ROTF%2BI512a-2%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710904070756418098" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FUn04CM7AzY/T0E0_7zAbuI/AAAAAAAABak/9hnt_exLsh0/s1600/ROTF%2BI512a-2%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FUn04CM7AzY/T0E0_7zAbuI/AAAAAAAABak/9hnt_exLsh0/s320/ROTF%2BI512a-2%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710904075470532322" border="0" /></a><br />It will look even better when we replace those 2 stand-ins with real actors.<br /><br />This is probably the best example of the improved CG model for Bibble's bar:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WROvt_U4iZQ/T0E1IVuUTsI/AAAAAAAABa0/ZiXNdEklZZ4/s1600/ROTF%2BI513-1A%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WROvt_U4iZQ/T0E1IVuUTsI/AAAAAAAABa0/ZiXNdEklZZ4/s320/ROTF%2BI513-1A%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710904219869138626" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VuYsPWfwOPM/T0E1IuE74mI/AAAAAAAABa8/blhiA0xPOO0/s1600/ROTF%2BI513-1A%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VuYsPWfwOPM/T0E1IuE74mI/AAAAAAAABa8/blhiA0xPOO0/s320/ROTF%2BI513-1A%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710904226406457954" border="0" /></a><br />Aside from the temporary stand-ins (Theresa, Wookiee, and bartender), I think this scene looks much more like a real bar and less like the fake CG bar in the old version.<br /><br />I'm going to keep re-rendering the background plates for the Bibble's Bar scenes. I also decided to redo the exterior model for Bibble's Bar.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-61276241241305624542012-01-29T10:07:00.000-08:002012-01-29T10:27:30.206-08:00Bibble's Bar with New LightingLooking at reference photos from "Attack of the Clones" and "Star Wars: The Old Republic," I realized that bars are very colorful:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RuYU3CrrYXk/TyWL7ylRVhI/AAAAAAAABX0/83PK7yxY_zs/s1600/vlcsnap-2011-12-18-16h09m45s136.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 138px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RuYU3CrrYXk/TyWL7ylRVhI/AAAAAAAABX0/83PK7yxY_zs/s320/vlcsnap-2011-12-18-16h09m45s136.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118362441242130" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qrzSZpVldX0/TyWL7zG9T4I/AAAAAAAABX8/mKHaSN02fAg/s1600/SS_20090213_005_1600x900%2B%2528Cantina%2Bof%2Bthe%2BHutt%2BPalace%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qrzSZpVldX0/TyWL7zG9T4I/AAAAAAAABX8/mKHaSN02fAg/s320/SS_20090213_005_1600x900%2B%2528Cantina%2Bof%2Bthe%2BHutt%2BPalace%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118362582536066" border="0" /></a><br /><br />So I experimented with different lighting combinations in Bibble's Bar. Just so you can see some of the trial-and-error that goes into this process, here are just a few of the lighting combinations I tried:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-abcxiuQcL3w/TyWMbSlarBI/AAAAAAAABYM/bd5ahul6VHM/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Yellow%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-abcxiuQcL3w/TyWMbSlarBI/AAAAAAAABYM/bd5ahul6VHM/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Yellow%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118903607733266" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fewa_6pmV_o/TyWMbe_qZSI/AAAAAAAABYU/OEA3o6Vt5k0/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fewa_6pmV_o/TyWMbe_qZSI/AAAAAAAABYU/OEA3o6Vt5k0/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118906939041058" border="0" /></a><br />The first picture (above, left) is the original lighting.<br />In the second picture (above, right), I changed the yellow "neon" lights (on the walls and bar) to purple, just to see how it looked. It looked more like a bar to me, so I knew things were moving in the right direction.<br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A3fNKq71now/TyWMbTvih-I/AAAAAAAABYg/vKJlVa712p8/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%25282x%2BPurple%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A3fNKq71now/TyWMbTvih-I/AAAAAAAABYg/vKJlVa712p8/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%25282x%2BPurple%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118903918626786" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s4QBGjFj9N8/TyWMbqwZu7I/AAAAAAAABYw/D5O1Svfp-oM/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2B0.5%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-s4QBGjFj9N8/TyWMbqwZu7I/AAAAAAAABYw/D5O1Svfp-oM/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2B0.5%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118910096260018" border="0" /></a><br />In the 2nd version (above, left), I changed the floor lights to purple too. That seemed like overkill, so I tried a 3rd version with green floor lights (above, right). Hmmm... not quite right so I tried changing the entire bar's lighting:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lfkxTHRe7zI/TyWNoU15ZMI/AAAAAAAABZE/Mg49jRcJ3Ug/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BPurple%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lfkxTHRe7zI/TyWNoU15ZMI/AAAAAAAABZE/Mg49jRcJ3Ug/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BPurple%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703120227063653570" border="0" /> </a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BF14QLxV-b8/TyWNoFdic5I/AAAAAAAABY8/GqxChPD9hOc/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BGreen%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BF14QLxV-b8/TyWNoFdic5I/AAAAAAAABY8/GqxChPD9hOc/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BGreen%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703120222934954898" border="0" /></a><br />The 4th version (above, left) has purple overall lighting.<br />The 5th version (above, right) has green overall lighting.<br /><br />It's kind of funny, because the "purple lighting" version looks a lot like the "Attack of the Clones" bar:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lfkxTHRe7zI/TyWNoU15ZMI/AAAAAAAABZE/Mg49jRcJ3Ug/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BPurple%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lfkxTHRe7zI/TyWNoU15ZMI/AAAAAAAABZE/Mg49jRcJ3Ug/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BPurple%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703120227063653570" border="0" /> </a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RuYU3CrrYXk/TyWL7ylRVhI/AAAAAAAABX0/83PK7yxY_zs/s1600/vlcsnap-2011-12-18-16h09m45s136.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 138px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RuYU3CrrYXk/TyWL7ylRVhI/AAAAAAAABX0/83PK7yxY_zs/s320/vlcsnap-2011-12-18-16h09m45s136.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118362441242130" border="0" /></a><br /><br />And the "green lighting" version looks a lot like the "Star Wars: The Old Republic" bar:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BF14QLxV-b8/TyWNoFdic5I/AAAAAAAABY8/GqxChPD9hOc/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BGreen%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BF14QLxV-b8/TyWNoFdic5I/AAAAAAAABY8/GqxChPD9hOc/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BGreen%2BGreen%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703120222934954898" border="0" /> </a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qrzSZpVldX0/TyWL7zG9T4I/AAAAAAAABX8/mKHaSN02fAg/s1600/SS_20090213_005_1600x900%2B%2528Cantina%2Bof%2Bthe%2BHutt%2BPalace%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qrzSZpVldX0/TyWL7zG9T4I/AAAAAAAABX8/mKHaSN02fAg/s320/SS_20090213_005_1600x900%2B%2528Cantina%2Bof%2Bthe%2BHutt%2BPalace%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118362582536066" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Personally, I liked the green lighting better, but it still didn't seem right. The yellow lights don't really match the purple and green color scheme, so I changed it again.<br /><br />In the 7th version (above, right), I changed the wall lights to orange. This is the version I like best. Just so you can see them side-by-side, here's the original lighting compared to the new lighting:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-abcxiuQcL3w/TyWMbSlarBI/AAAAAAAABYM/bd5ahul6VHM/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Yellow%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-abcxiuQcL3w/TyWMbSlarBI/AAAAAAAABYM/bd5ahul6VHM/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Yellow%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703118903607733266" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--4nGjoasSl0/TyWObep9LOI/AAAAAAAABZc/3Yn12ifu0EA/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BOrange%2BGreen%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--4nGjoasSl0/TyWObep9LOI/AAAAAAAABZc/3Yn12ifu0EA/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Purple%2BOrange%2BGreen%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703121105871252706" border="0" /></a><br />I think the new version looks a lot more bar-like and night clubby -- it just has more "atmosphere." Also, on a technical side, the green overall lighting means we can get away with green spill on sloppy chroma keys when we composite-in our live actors. :)<br /><br />Now that Bibble's Bar is essentially finished -- at least for now -- I'm going to re-render the backgrounds for our animatic.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-34426390797380467152012-01-08T09:50:00.001-08:002012-01-08T10:00:24.906-08:00New Version of Bibble's BarI decided to revise the CG model for Bibble's Bar. It still isn't done, but I figured I'd at least post pictures of the current work-in-progress.<br /><br />Here are before-and-after pictures comparing the previous version of Bibble's Bar with the new version:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IeFOkZg-6Nk/TwnXrl3JFzI/AAAAAAAABWg/raRMa3ECfeo/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IeFOkZg-6Nk/TwnXrl3JFzI/AAAAAAAABWg/raRMa3ECfeo/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695320347684443954" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IVKmKJOg36o/TwnXr3eOBGI/AAAAAAAABWs/prQv9CjnN6Y/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IVKmKJOg36o/TwnXr3eOBGI/AAAAAAAABWs/prQv9CjnN6Y/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695320352411747426" border="0" /></a><br />Of course, the main difference is the removal of the stadium seating that used to surround the room. The original Jedi Temple Briefing Room model had that distinctive stadium seating and I think removing it makes it less obvious that we used that model to create Bibble's Bar.<br /><br />Here's a comparison of the original Jedi Temple Briefing Room model and our remodeled version of Bibble's Bar:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ahHTb5IAkFI/TwnYU6yP9ZI/AAAAAAAABW4/J_auFhCHV30/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Orig%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ahHTb5IAkFI/TwnYU6yP9ZI/AAAAAAAABW4/J_auFhCHV30/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528Orig%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695321057675703698" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EmLznLowd0Y/TwnYU9gQTCI/AAAAAAAABXA/DlNvj_dH1bc/s1600/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EmLznLowd0Y/TwnYU9gQTCI/AAAAAAAABXA/DlNvj_dH1bc/s320/ROTF%2BI511a%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695321058405534754" border="0" /></a><br />Hopefully, aside from the stairs, it's hard to tell it's the same model...<br /><br />In addition to removing the stadium seating, I also changed the texture mapping on the walls, added a bar, and added tables. Here are some random close-ups of the bar:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5OH0Ss4yU5s/TwnYnQA390I/AAAAAAAABXQ/httV-GpfDFY/s1600/Bibble%2527s%2BBar%2BV2%2B%2528Close-Up%2B2%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5OH0Ss4yU5s/TwnYnQA390I/AAAAAAAABXQ/httV-GpfDFY/s320/Bibble%2527s%2BBar%2BV2%2B%2528Close-Up%2B2%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695321372611835714" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jwSQqq81rTY/TwnYnS9j7lI/AAAAAAAABXY/iin7VF-ezmI/s1600/Bibble%2527s%2BBar%2BV2%2B%2528Close-Up%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jwSQqq81rTY/TwnYnS9j7lI/AAAAAAAABXY/iin7VF-ezmI/s320/Bibble%2527s%2BBar%2BV2%2B%2528Close-Up%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695321373403246162" border="0" /></a><br /><br />And here's a close-up of one of the tables (NOT in its final position -- this was a test picture from when I was testing different texture maps on the table):<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wXWXqZsTMYs/TwnZDEz2o3I/AAAAAAAABXo/kxUvdChrHAA/s1600/Table%2BV2.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wXWXqZsTMYs/TwnZDEz2o3I/AAAAAAAABXo/kxUvdChrHAA/s320/Table%2BV2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5695321850640769906" border="0" /></a><br />In fact, you can tell it's a test picture because not only is the table not in its final position, but the white/glowing tabletop panel is also too low (which is why it has that weird look rather than being a solid off-white).<br /><br />Overall, I think we're moving in the right direction. The new version looks more like a bar to me, although it still needs finishing touches (set dressing, etc.). I'll post more pictures when the model is further along...<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-80615754623832877892011-12-18T12:20:00.000-08:002011-12-18T12:22:30.720-08:00Possible Change to Bibble's BarI've never been completely happy with the way Bibble's Bar looked. As I watch our current animatic, lots of things jump out at me as needing improvement. Bibble's Bar is one of them.<br /><br />Right now, I'm creating a "Version 2" of the CG model for Bibble's Bar. Unfortunately, I'm not done yet so it isn't ready for before-and-after pictures. However, I'll post pictures as soon as the "remodeling" is complete.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-2278327855368904522011-12-05T17:33:00.001-08:002011-12-05T17:36:59.573-08:00Jedi Starfighter Cockpit SetLast week, Brad and I started detailing the Jedi Starfighter Cockpit set:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i_5pBvdM2hA/Tt1xL7SEKsI/AAAAAAAABWI/xakpccO9iD8/s1600/IMG_8937.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i_5pBvdM2hA/Tt1xL7SEKsI/AAAAAAAABWI/xakpccO9iD8/s320/IMG_8937.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682822754517396162" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eJ_tTLn45-M/Tt1xL2x-RAI/AAAAAAAABWU/ZsYhlLWJ1Iw/s1600/IMG_8936.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 212px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eJ_tTLn45-M/Tt1xL2x-RAI/AAAAAAAABWU/ZsYhlLWJ1Iw/s320/IMG_8936.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5682822753309049858" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Right now, the only thing we've done is paint the interior. However, we've collected a bunch of random parts that we're going to use to add details to the interior. Once it's done it should look WAY better than our previous CG model that we used for the Jedi Starfighter cockpit. I can't wait to post pictures!<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-26141766964592586912011-11-27T09:24:00.000-08:002011-11-27T09:39:05.521-08:00Final Camera Angles on Improved Carinda Shuttle InteriorI figured out the problem with the camera angles, so here are before-and-after comparisons between the old Carinda shuttle interior and the new Carinda shuttle interior (using the model for the Millennium Falcon's interior)...<br /><br />Scene M400 (Yane treating Ryke's injuries):<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-v2RNEfCIXmk/TtJyuD4pIpI/AAAAAAAABSk/3RE2kRM9NdU/s1600/ROTF%2BM400%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; In fact, I'm pretty sure I have to reposition Ryke and Yane and/or fix the camera angles. Nevertheless, I figured I'd at least post some before-and-after pictures because they still show the new shuttle interior.<br /><br />Here are before-and-after comparisons of Scene M400 when Yane is working on Ryke's injuries:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2bqOkEQr_W0/TslCG-ZOBlI/AAAAAAAABRE/rQ-SRwbOSEs/s1600/ROTF%2BM400%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2bqOkEQr_W0/TslCG-ZOBlI/AAAAAAAABRE/rQ-SRwbOSEs/s320/ROTF%2BM400%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677141492872644178" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sszND43T39Q/TslCHAevVPI/AAAAAAAABRM/UMCBsAh6E0w/s1600/ROTF%2BM400%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sszND43T39Q/TslCHAevVPI/AAAAAAAABRM/UMCBsAh6E0w/s320/ROTF%2BM400%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677141493432669426" border="0" /></a><br />As mentioned in a previous post, I think it's obvious that we used the Millennium Falcon interior for our Carinda shuttle's interior. However, since the Carinda shuttle is a YT-2400 Outrider (which looks like an earlier version of the Millennium Falcon), I think we're O.K. with the similar interiors.<br /><br />Also, I think the new model looks MUCH more realistic, which was the original goal. So it looks like all of the hard work texture-mapping and improving the Millennium Falcon interior model was worth it.<br /><br />Here are before-and-after comparisons of Scene M403 where Yane is watching footage of Padme giving birth to Luke and Leia:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_4xdJG0mhJE/TslC7Bx7k3I/AAAAAAAABRc/o7JF-YKoy1I/s1600/ROTF%2BM403%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_4xdJG0mhJE/TslC7Bx7k3I/AAAAAAAABRc/o7JF-YKoy1I/s320/ROTF%2BM403%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677142387134796658" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ci1dSp1r2rU/TslC7X1T2uI/AAAAAAAABRo/5U19tXoUwnU/s1600/ROTF%2BM403%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ci1dSp1r2rU/TslC7X1T2uI/AAAAAAAABRo/5U19tXoUwnU/s320/ROTF%2BM403%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677142393054550754" border="0" /></a><br /><br />And here's Scene M404a, which is a wider shot of the same scene:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LqEoFAV3MRk/TslDIK9BW-I/AAAAAAAABR0/UQKLRNmyc1A/s1600/rotf%2Bm404a%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LqEoFAV3MRk/TslDIK9BW-I/AAAAAAAABR0/UQKLRNmyc1A/s320/rotf%2Bm404a%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677142612935531490" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XEliZg5sBGo/TslDIQfazjI/AAAAAAAABSA/LtvHCUr1H9Y/s1600/ROTF%2BM404a%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XEliZg5sBGo/TslDIQfazjI/AAAAAAAABSA/LtvHCUr1H9Y/s320/ROTF%2BM404a%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677142614421982770" border="0" /></a><br />I'll probably have to darken the lights in the "after" picture to make the hologram more visible. But other than that, I think the "after" picture looks WAY better than the "before" picture.<br /><br />Here's the last before-and-after comparison. This is Scene M404d when Ryke uses The Force to turn off the hologram:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-veSXbCpj31k/TslDogAeUdI/AAAAAAAABSM/LhQFxiKMqIM/s1600/ROTF%2BM404d%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-veSXbCpj31k/TslDogAeUdI/AAAAAAAABSM/LhQFxiKMqIM/s320/ROTF%2BM404d%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677143168342970834" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cEIP2GkJuDo/TslDo7zRLGI/AAAAAAAABSU/sI-QdxTCSTU/s1600/ROTF%2BM404d%2B%2528New%2529.bmp"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cEIP2GkJuDo/TslDo7zRLGI/AAAAAAAABSU/sI-QdxTCSTU/s320/ROTF%2BM404d%2B%2528New%2529.bmp" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677143175803776098" border="0" /></a><br />This is an example where I'm pretty sure I need to change the camera angle, but ignoring that, the background looks way better than before!<br /><br />That's it for now. I'm going to have to review the camera angles, fix it, then post the corrected screenshots later.<br /><br />Happy Thanksgiving!<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-11667163849682026802011-11-13T12:16:00.000-08:002011-11-13T12:38:30.738-08:00Improved Carinda Shuttle Scenes, continuedI finished replacing the old Carinda shuttle model with the new Outrider model. Here are before-and-after comparisons of Scene I500a showing the Carinda shuttle landing on Alderaan:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YogWu7uAD2Y/TsAm4xZj7KI/AAAAAAAABPw/g50C_UqhtCM/s1600/ROTF%2BI500a-28%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YogWu7uAD2Y/TsAm4xZj7KI/AAAAAAAABPw/g50C_UqhtCM/s320/ROTF%2BI500a-28%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674578287261904034" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rzsytHc3DQc/TsAm5NDca1I/AAAAAAAABP8/-P_Zjid1fhY/s1600/ROTF%2BI500a-28%2B%2528After%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rzsytHc3DQc/TsAm5NDca1I/AAAAAAAABP8/-P_Zjid1fhY/s320/ROTF%2BI500a-28%2B%2528After%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674578294685330258" border="0" /></a><br />(In this scene, the Carinda shuttle flies towards the city visible on the middle-right of the screen.)<br /><br />The next scene, Scene I500b, took a little more work. Instead of just replacing the Carinda shuttle model, I re-did the entire scene because I was never happy with the way the old scene looked. Here's the old scene, showing the Carinda shuttle flying into the Med Center's docking bay:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eF6etyc8yFw/TsAnMfEUmmI/AAAAAAAABQI/2wtxVjBZ-8s/s1600/ROTF%2BI500b%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eF6etyc8yFw/TsAnMfEUmmI/AAAAAAAABQI/2wtxVjBZ-8s/s320/ROTF%2BI500b%2B%2528Old%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674578625938365026" border="0" /></a><br />To make things easier to see, I circled the Carinda shuttle and also drew an arrow showing its flight path into the Med Center's docking bay.<br /><br />In the old animatic, I didn't like the way the Med Center looked -- it was incongruous with the rest of the architecture. I also didn't like the way the overall shot looked -- it looked too CG and fake.<br /><br />Here's the 1st revision, which I eventually discarded, along with the reference photo I based it on:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xlVIweDsc4c/TsAn193G42I/AAAAAAAABQU/F9u2geX3Ccc/s1600/ROTF%2BI500b%2BV1.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xlVIweDsc4c/TsAn193G42I/AAAAAAAABQU/F9u2geX3Ccc/s320/ROTF%2BI500b%2BV1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674579338579075938" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bz_h5HEEcLU/TsAn2KrCtUI/AAAAAAAABQc/cTVhbIye0zg/s1600/ROTF%2BI500b%2BV1%2B%2528Reference%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 210px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bz_h5HEEcLU/TsAn2KrCtUI/AAAAAAAABQc/cTVhbIye0zg/s320/ROTF%2BI500b%2BV1%2B%2528Reference%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674579342018131266" border="0" /></a><br />The red arrow shows the flight path Yane's shuttle would have followed as it descended into the Med Center's landing area (the same flight path the Slave I ship is following in the reference photo on the right, above).<br /><br />I ultimately discarded this version because it still looked like crap. Here are 2 screenshots from the 2nd version:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V36tdGxB67Y/TsAoYL7QA1I/AAAAAAAABQs/BR1CdayS3ZE/s1600/ROTF%2BI500b-0%2B%2528New%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-V36tdGxB67Y/TsAoYL7QA1I/AAAAAAAABQs/BR1CdayS3ZE/s320/ROTF%2BI500b-0%2B%2528New%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674579926470099794" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YsXJwqGyvEU/TsAoYKX2FrI/AAAAAAAABQ4/aAJacIsYWDg/s1600/ROTF%2BI500b-120%2B%2528new%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YsXJwqGyvEU/TsAoYKX2FrI/AAAAAAAABQ4/aAJacIsYWDg/s320/ROTF%2BI500b-120%2B%2528new%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674579926053164722" border="0" /></a><br />In the 1st screenshot (above left), I drew red arrows showing the animated parts of this scene:<br />1) The landspeeder on the left goes from the bottom-to-top of the screen,<br />2) The droid (barely visible in these compressed images) goes from left-to-right in the middle-center of the screen, and<br />3) The Carinda shuttle lands in the Med Center's landing area on the right.<br /><br />In the 2nd screenshot (above right), you can see the animated models in their final positions:<br />1) The landspeeder is at the top of the screen,<br />2) The droid has disappeared going through the doorway to the Med Center's landing area, and<br />3) The Carinda shuttle has landed.<br /><br />This version is still rough, which is why the shadows look crappy. I'm also going to animate some of those people walking along the road, and probably add more set dressing. Nevertheless, I think it's a huge improvement over the old animatic.<br /><br />Those were the final 2 scenes with the Carinda shuttle, so now that they're complete (at least for now), I'm going to go through the animatic and re-do all of the Carinda shuttle's interior shots. The interior shots are going to use the Millennium Falcon's interior, so they should look a LOT better. Hopefully I'll have some nice before-and-after shots ready for next week's blog post.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-77672408456750198782011-11-06T13:08:00.000-08:002011-11-06T13:30:07.808-08:00Improved Carinda Shuttle Scenes and ModelI've started replacing the old Carinda shuttle model with our new Outrider model. I'll post those before-and-after shots after I finish them.<br /><br />In addition to retrofitting our animatic with the new Carinda shuttle model, I finished texture mapping the model that we're going to use for the shuttle interior. Here are before-and-after comparisons:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wRQHXP8meDw/Trb5hN1sRqI/AAAAAAAABN4/sFHOKommeIc/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B01a.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wRQHXP8meDw/Trb5hN1sRqI/AAAAAAAABN4/sFHOKommeIc/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B01a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671995129765578402" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B-cFsyrWAV8/Trb5hC_PAOI/AAAAAAAABOA/aHKaiKP62rs/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B01b.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-B-cFsyrWAV8/Trb5hC_PAOI/AAAAAAAABOA/aHKaiKP62rs/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B01b.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671995126852813026" border="0" /></a><br />As I mentioned in a previous post, since the Outrider looks like an earlier version of the Millennium Falcon, we're going to use the Millennium Falcon's interior for our shuttle interior.<br /><br />As you can see from the "before" image (above left), the model was beautiful but it needed to be completely texture mapped. After many long hours, we now have the "after" image (above right) which looks a lot more photorealistic.<br /><br />Here are more before-and-after comparisons, from different camera angles:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-46Rbtyb-018/Trb6UtA7udI/AAAAAAAABOQ/H0AAMC9Pi2Y/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B02a.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-46Rbtyb-018/Trb6UtA7udI/AAAAAAAABOQ/H0AAMC9Pi2Y/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B02a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996014307555794" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GFUZUWrcCg8/Trb6UveVpVI/AAAAAAAABOc/opBnj6wx7rI/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B02b.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GFUZUWrcCg8/Trb6UveVpVI/AAAAAAAABOc/opBnj6wx7rI/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B02b.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996014967760210" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sVF4xTGiOkY/Trb6cM_hbzI/AAAAAAAABOo/VmBfXNuMa-g/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B03a.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sVF4xTGiOkY/Trb6cM_hbzI/AAAAAAAABOo/VmBfXNuMa-g/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B03a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996143150657330" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cRKsZTXfno0/Trb6cLqPbXI/AAAAAAAABOw/BZk86ylr-LE/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B03b.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cRKsZTXfno0/Trb6cLqPbXI/AAAAAAAABOw/BZk86ylr-LE/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B03b.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996142792961394" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A0mGMJgEGbY/Trb6jNwDNKI/AAAAAAAABPA/2hNcurfZyuc/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B04a.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-A0mGMJgEGbY/Trb6jNwDNKI/AAAAAAAABPA/2hNcurfZyuc/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B04a.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996263613281442" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dZHEh2INXHk/Trb6jSGfXOI/AAAAAAAABPI/SwdjEieOD10/s1600/Falcon%2BInterior%2B04b.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dZHEh2INXHk/Trb6jSGfXOI/AAAAAAAABPI/SwdjEieOD10/s320/Falcon%2BInterior%2B04b.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996264781143266" border="0" /></a><br />This is only a preliminary texture mapping -- as I go through and retrofit each scene in the shuttle interior, I'll have to improve the texture maps and probably add set dressing after I know which parts of the shuttle have close-ups.<br /><br />Nevertheless, I think this model for the shuttle interior looks much more realistic than our old model:<br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fD-ide6VJAQ/Trb7Cy_FkLI/AAAAAAAABPY/060bdsBMpyw/s1600/Shuttle%2BInterior%2B1.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fD-ide6VJAQ/Trb7Cy_FkLI/AAAAAAAABPY/060bdsBMpyw/s320/Shuttle%2BInterior%2B1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996806184407218" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--iDOWVrVXEk/Trb7DMUvqvI/AAAAAAAABPk/Suhgp_4Y5Vg/s1600/Shuttle%2BInterior%2B2.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--iDOWVrVXEk/Trb7DMUvqvI/AAAAAAAABPk/Suhgp_4Y5Vg/s320/Shuttle%2BInterior%2B2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5671996812986133234" border="0" /></a><br />That just looks CG and fake to me, even though I spent hundreds of hours texture-mapping and adding set dressing to that model. Oh well, as long as our final movie looks as good as we can possibly make it, that's all that matters.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-77642777625986404472011-10-30T09:30:00.000-07:002011-10-30T09:41:43.415-07:00Improved OutriderI finished improving the Outrider model -- at least for now. I may have to make another pass after I replace our old shuttle model with this one, if I discover that certain scenes require more detail.<br /><br />Anyway, here are before-and-after comparisons:<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kj94WLYez0/Tq18GBK6P3I/AAAAAAAABLg/XPcX19_T5us/s1600/Outrider%2B1%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6kj94WLYez0/Tq18GBK6P3I/AAAAAAAABLg/XPcX19_T5us/s320/Outrider%2B1%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669323948764577650" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-difxEQOT6dI/Tq18GC4uGQI/AAAAAAAABLQ/lefhEonbnQk/s1600/Outrider%2B1%2B%2528After%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-difxEQOT6dI/Tq18GC4uGQI/AAAAAAAABLQ/lefhEonbnQk/s320/Outrider%2B1%2B%2528After%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669323949225154818" border="0" /></a><br />Aside from the texture mapping, the red arrows show where I made physical changes to the model:<br />1) I removed those fins from the cockpit, and<br />2) I used "greebles" to add detail to the model's left side.<br /><br />Here's a better view showing the cockpit with the fins removed, as well as some greebles that I added to make the ship look more realistic and less CG:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8N7SHGXFtNU/Tq18sLawDzI/AAAAAAAABLo/oSWtQXR7Tew/s1600/Outrider%2B2%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8N7SHGXFtNU/Tq18sLawDzI/AAAAAAAABLo/oSWtQXR7Tew/s320/Outrider%2B2%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669324604350402354" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r3b6FFyYKsA/Tq18sNbywFI/AAAAAAAABLw/VbxFtZw_74c/s1600/Outrider%2B2%2B%2528After%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-r3b6FFyYKsA/Tq18sNbywFI/AAAAAAAABLw/VbxFtZw_74c/s320/Outrider%2B2%2B%2528After%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669324604891643986" border="0" /></a><br /><br />More greeble detailing:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyxQmCwHaWo/Tq189-txjbI/AAAAAAAABMA/iqVY_uMzx0E/s1600/Outrider%2B3%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qyxQmCwHaWo/Tq189-txjbI/AAAAAAAABMA/iqVY_uMzx0E/s320/Outrider%2B3%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669324910178176434" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bu8o7v3XB7k/Tq1894TWGtI/AAAAAAAABMM/dO6ykrXAQvQ/s1600/Outrider%2B3%2B%2528After%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Bu8o7v3XB7k/Tq1894TWGtI/AAAAAAAABMM/dO6ykrXAQvQ/s320/Outrider%2B3%2B%2528After%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669324908456712914" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v-25L7_Zscs/Tq19Jcr-w3I/AAAAAAAABMY/Brf6VG0OrxQ/s1600/Outrider%2B4%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v-25L7_Zscs/Tq19Jcr-w3I/AAAAAAAABMY/Brf6VG0OrxQ/s320/Outrider%2B4%2B%2528Before%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669325107202278258" border="0" /></a> <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rNMfYhh6sUw/Tq19JuW1i-I/AAAAAAAABMg/eAGJIerRJEI/s1600/Outrider%2B4%2B%2528After%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rNMfYhh6sUw/Tq19JuW1i-I/AAAAAAAABMg/eAGJIerRJEI/s320/Outrider%2B4%2B%2528After%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5669325111945432034" border="0" /></a><br /><br />As I mentioned above, I'll have to go through all of our scenes with the Carinda shuttle and replace our old model with the new model. Some of those scenes have close-ups, so I'll probably have to make another pass on this Outrider model and add additional detail.<br /><br />I've also started improving the CG model for the Carinda shuttle interior. Since the Outrider looks a lot like the Millennium Falcon, I'm using the Millennium Falcon interior for our Carinda shuttle interior. I'll post before-and-after pictures as soon as I'm finished with the new-and-improved model.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-30469778764296085422011-10-23T18:56:00.001-07:002011-10-23T19:20:39.480-07:00We're Back!I can't believe it's been almost a year since we've worked on this project!<br /><br />On the bright side, taking the extended break has allowed me to watch our movie with fresh eyes. Most notably, there are 2 changes I'm going to make immediately:<br /><br />1) Change Yane's shuttle, and<br />2) Change the Med Center on Tatooine<br /><br />Here's the 3d model we've been using for Yane's shuttle:<br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v1j4TJjdyCQ/TqTGjkCf0fI/AAAAAAAABKU/AW3ltUc17cY/s1600/Shuttle.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 186px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v1j4TJjdyCQ/TqTGjkCf0fI/AAAAAAAABKU/AW3ltUc17cY/s320/Shuttle.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666872545410798066" border="0" /></a><br /><br />It's cool, but I realized we might want to change Yane's shuttle to a YT-2400 "Outrider":<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7HFXIe2XrmQ/TqTG-Bnf8CI/AAAAAAAABKg/_lj7dmVvYvs/s1600/Shuttle%2B%2528Outrider%2529.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 142px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7HFXIe2XrmQ/TqTG-Bnf8CI/AAAAAAAABKg/_lj7dmVvYvs/s320/Shuttle%2B%2528Outrider%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666873000027222050" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Here are the main reasons FOR changing the model:<br />1) It looks more "Star Wars"-y with that "used universe" look, and<br />2) It looks like a precursor to the Millennium Falcon, which fits into our movie's timeline (which is after "Revenge of the Sith" and before "A New Hope").<br /><br />And here are the main reasons AGAINST changing the model:<br />1) It looks like the Millennium Falcon. We don't want to look unoriginal or look like we're copying "Star Wars" TOO much,<br />2) I'll have to spend hours upon hours improving the models (I'll have to improve this model of the exterior, and also the model for the interior cockpit and/or cargo hold) so that they can handle close-ups, and<br />3) I'll have to spend hours upon hours replacing the old models with the new models in all of our shots.<br /><br />After discussing it with Brad and Sarah, we decided to switch to the new Outrider model because it just looks better. When we started this project, we decided to do everything within our limited means to make the best movie possible. So if that means throwing out the old model and replacing it with a new model, so be it.<br /><br />I'm currently in the middle of improving the Outrider model, so I don't have any before-and-after comparisons yet. Hopefully next time...<br /><br />The 2nd change I want to make is the Med Center on Tatooine. Here's a screenshot from the animatic:<br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SfgEVol8DM4/TqTJ65BpQ6I/AAAAAAAABKs/RiTX3JqJYew/s1600/Med%2BCenter.jpg"><img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SfgEVol8DM4/TqTJ65BpQ6I/AAAAAAAABKs/RiTX3JqJYew/s320/Med%2BCenter.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5666876244716241826" border="0" /></a><br />The red arrow is pointing to the enormous Med Center and the red circle shows Yane's shuttle flying into the Med Center's docking bay.<br /><br />Truthfully, I've never been happy with this scene. The Med Center looks a little incongruent with the other architecture, and I've never been happy with the way the city (presumably Mos Eisley) looks either.<br /><br />I haven't figured out how I'm going to improve this scene yet, but I'll worry about that after I finish improving the Outrider's exterior and interior models.<br /><br />Anyway, that's what I'm working on now that I'm back on the project. Hopefully we'll have some super-cool blog updates over the next few months.<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-62812137228389961482011-05-15T10:12:00.000-07:002011-05-15T10:16:04.784-07:00UpdateSorry for the lack of activity. I just wanted to post a quick update to let everyone know that we have NOT forgotten about this project!<br /><br />I've been busy getting married, moving, and now I'm in the middle of buying a business. Brad and Sarah have also been busy having a baby and moving.<br /><br />So... unfortunately this project has been on the back burner for longer than we anticipated. However, we have every intention of jumping back on this project once things settle down a bit. We have a lot of time and money invested in this project and want to see it through to completion as much as anyone else.<br /><br />Thanks for your patience,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-83393485611220330132010-11-28T11:16:00.000-08:002010-11-28T11:18:59.856-08:00HiatusI just wanted to post a quick note that we're on a temporary hiatus. I'm busy with wedding stuff and Brad's busy with newborn baby stuff. We're hoping to jump back on this project in March or April 2011.Bobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2841204004530038985.post-51488791934996667522010-09-07T00:44:00.000-07:002010-09-07T00:51:15.436-07:00Improved Coruscant Spaceport Texture MapsSorry for the delay since my last blog post. I've been busy with wedding stuff, so I haven't spent much time on our project. :(<br /><br />Anyway, I just finished improving the texture maps on our Coruscant Spaceport model. Here are before-and-after comparisons:<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GI9ivLmfksM/TIXtrl-t4iI/AAAAAAAABJ4/G8_mh9QGItA/s1600/ROTF+B102a-47+%28Old%29.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_GI9ivLmfksM/TIXtrl-t4iI/AAAAAAAABJ4/G8_mh9QGItA/s320/ROTF+B102a-47+%28Old%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514074651970363938" border="0" /></a> <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_GI9ivLmfksM/TIXtrMaBEeI/AAAAAAAABJw/6wPXZ97uHRE/s1600/ROTF+B102a-47+%28New%29.JPG"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_GI9ivLmfksM/TIXtrMaBEeI/AAAAAAAABJw/6wPXZ97uHRE/s320/ROTF+B102a-47+%28New%29.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5514074645105545698" border="0" /></a><br />At first glance, they may look the same, but I added shininess and reflections. Here are some places to look to see the difference:<br /><ul><li>The building on the bottom-left "pops out" more.</li><li>The cylindrical tower and its connecting wall on the top-right is also more three-dimensional.</li><li>The red airbuses look more metallic.<br /></li><li>The landing platform surface (bottom-right) is a little dirtier and, in my opinion, more realistic looking.</li></ul>Hopefully I'll be able to resume work on our movie on a fairly regular basis, but wedding planning is taking lots of time so blog posts may be spotty for awhile. I know... I know... the pictures look almost exactly the same, but when you see the full-size pictures, the new-and-improved version looks much more 3D and realistic. So, for now at least, those scenes are gone, condemned to the "Deleted Scenes" featurette.<br /><br />Of course, there's a slight chance we may add-back one or more flashbacks in the future, probably making them shorter and perhaps even adding some comic relief. But until then, they're gone... :(<br /><br />On a brighter note for most of you, that also means ALL of my acting scenes have been deleted! (Well, at least all of my "face character" scenes are gone -- I'm still Darth Vader, all of the Stormtroopers, the Imperial Sympathizer, and many other masked characters, so I can still sit at the autograph table at our future publicity appearances. :D )<br /><br />Later,<br />BobBobhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15628574128971444702noreply@blogger.com0
