Final Camera Angles on Improved Carinda Shuttle Interior

I figured out the problem with the camera angles, so here are before-and-after comparisons between the old Carinda shuttle interior and the new Carinda shuttle interior (using the model for the Millennium Falcon's interior)...

As mentioned in last week's post, I darkened the interior a little bit to make the holodisc footage easier to see.

I'll probably have to add a little more detailing and improve the texture maps in close-ups like this.

Same here -- in extreme close-ups I need to improve the texture mapping and detailing so that it looks more realistic and less CG.

I haven't added any of the new-and-improved scenes to the animatic, so I'll probably do that next and see how everything looks. Exciting stuff!

Improved Carinda Shuttle Interior

I'm still in the middle of replacing our old Carinda shuttle interior with the new model. In fact, I'm pretty sure I have to reposition Ryke and Yane and/or fix the camera angles. Nevertheless, I figured I'd at least post some before-and-after pictures because they still show the new shuttle interior.

Here are before-and-after comparisons of Scene M400 when Yane is working on Ryke's injuries:

As mentioned in a previous post, I think it's obvious that we used the Millennium Falcon interior for our Carinda shuttle's interior. However, since the Carinda shuttle is a YT-2400 Outrider (which looks like an earlier version of the Millennium Falcon), I think we're O.K. with the similar interiors.

Also, I think the new model looks MUCH more realistic, which was the original goal. So it looks like all of the hard work texture-mapping and improving the Millennium Falcon interior model was worth it.

Here are before-and-after comparisons of Scene M403 where Yane is watching footage of Padme giving birth to Luke and Leia:


And here's Scene M404a, which is a wider shot of the same scene:

I'll probably have to darken the lights in the "after" picture to make the hologram more visible. But other than that, I think the "after" picture looks WAY better than the "before" picture.

Here's the last before-and-after comparison. This is Scene M404d when Ryke uses The Force to turn off the hologram:

This is an example where I'm pretty sure I need to change the camera angle, but ignoring that, the background looks way better than before!

That's it for now. I'm going to have to review the camera angles, fix it, then post the corrected screenshots later.

The Carinda Shuttle Interior Is Done... For Now

I finished improving the model for the Carinda shuttle interior. Here are before-and-after pictures of Scene M400:


The 1st picture shows the original model. As mentioned previously, there were too many lights and it also looked too fake -- like a CG model rather than a real set.

The 2nd picture shows the improved model. I replaced a bunch of the lights with random cool-looking gizmos that I kitbashed from the Millennium Falcon interior. I also threw a bunch of hoses and piping on the walls, and added cushions around the cockpit doorway (as seen in the Millennium Falcon). It looks much more realistic to me -- more organic and "lived-in," rather than geometric and sterile.

The 3rd picture shows the improved model, but over-lit so that you can see everything in more detail.

Even though I added more light (compare the 1st and 2nd pictures), I still think the model is too dark. I'll probably make it a little brighter, though not as bright as the 3rd picture.

Here's another before-and-after comparison, from Scene M408:

Again, doesn't the 2nd picture look more organic and "lived-in?" This is more consistent with the "used universe" look that George Lucas wanted for his "Star Wars" movies.

I also threw in another metal drum (bottom-middle of the 2nd picture) to give the cargo hold a more "lived-in" look:

Not a big change, but I think it adds a little realism to the model.

This isn't the final version of the Carinda shuttle interior, but that's all the changes I plan on making for now. There will almost certainly be more improvements in the future, but for now I'm going to move on to other models and clean those up...

Also, I'm moving next week, so I probably won't be able to work on the movie for a week or two. This will probably be the last blog post for a few weeks. Sorry. :(
